Hampton University was founded in 1868, one of the historically Black educational institutions started in the years following the Civil War. The school began as a modest center for instruction in practical trades, and almost all of the early graduates became teachers. Obviously, the school has grown considerably in the last 140 years, and is now home to some 4,200 undergrads, of whom almost two-thirds are women.
