The United States Coast Guard Academy is the only service academy that doesn’t require a nomination from a member of Congress. It also has the reputation of being one of the most selective colleges in the country. Fully 85% of graduates continue to serve in the Coast Guard after their five-year commitment. Cadets receive free tuition, health and dental benefits, and even a small stipend. As with all of the nation’s military academies, the USCGA’s alumni tend to be conservative, successful, and strongly supportive of their school.
